Delhi is set to introduce new rules for paying guest (PG) accommodations and coaching institutes, with the government targeting a comprehensive regulatory policy within the next one to one-and-a-half months.
Delhi Education Minister Ashish Sood said the government has already been working on regulations for student accommodation, but the recent Satya Niketan building collapse has accelerated the process.
The incident, which claimed seven lives and left several people injured, has renewed concerns over safety standards in buildings being used as student accommodation.
Common Web Portal for PGs
The Delhi government is planning to introduce a common web portal where PG operators can register details about their accommodations.
The proposed portal is expected to include information such as:
- Accommodation availability
- Facilities provided
- Compliance with safety standards
- Other relevant details about the PG property
The aim is to make information about PG accommodations more accessible and improve regulatory oversight.
Education Minister Meets Students
Ashish Sood also met students from Delhi University South Campus and professional colleges affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU).
The meeting was held to understand the problems students face while living in PG accommodations and to gather their concerns as the government works on the new regulatory framework.
Proposed Safety Measures
The government is also considering several safety and regulatory requirements for PG accommodations.
The proposed framework may include:
- Municipal licensing for PG buildings
- Police clearance
- Structural safety and fire-safety approvals
- A unique registration number for each PG
